Description |
Four walnut spindle chairs. Slightly concave top, appr. 3 in. wide, with serpentine curves to fit 4 spindles that form open back of chair. Spindles are turned. Cane seat (not original) slightly flaring with bowed front. Tapering knob-turned front legs, small button feet. Back legs plain but tapering. Plain stretchers. a & b) Lady's chairs - Arched top rail has crest of a carved rose flanked by leaves. c & d) Gentleman's chairs - top rails are plain. Used in the ballroom of John Wood's Octagon mansion. Chairs were acquired by Elizabeth H. Marsh from John Wood's octagonal mansion, c. 1890-1900. |
